In this episode we turn our attention to Rush's 1980 album Permanent Waves. It was a change of direction for the band and their first big commercial success, and the album immediately preceding and essentially laying the groundwork for their monster breakthrough album, Moving Pictures.

Rush fans are a unique in their fervid devotion to the band and we explore that devotion as we discuss the first progressive rock album to embrace the burgeoning sound 80s rock and roll.

Listen to an “upstart” Rush being interviewed by KZEW in Dallas/Fort Worth from 1974. Neil was newly ensconced behind the drum kit.


The band was interviewed while on tour in 1979. They discuss their current influences and their upcoming LP, Permanent Waves.


Rush in Le Studio in Montreal, Quebec.

The recording sessions for Permanent Waves was the first time in a while the band recorded an album in Canada. It made for a much more relaxing environment.


The famous “Dewey Defeats Truman” picture originally used on the cover for Permanent Waves.

The band was threatened with a lawsuit by the paper, and the headline was removed from subsequent covers.
