On this episode, we discuss another Texas music legend who died this year: Billy Joe Shaver.
He first came to prominence because he wrote 10 out of the 11 songs on Wylon Jennings’ 1973 outlaw country breakthrough, Honky Tonk Heroes. He recorded 17 studio albums over his career.
He was a rare voice, that that wrote about what he lived in a way that was unassuming and straightforwardly poetic. Other country artists took notice as did other songwriters. It speaks volumes that he was recorded by the likes of tBobby Bare, Johnny Cash, Tom T. Hall, and Kris Kristofferson.
