On this episode, we explore the circumstances that gave rise to The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society, an often praised (yet often overlooked) masterpiece by the Kinks.
Fronted by the Bothers Davies (Ray and Dave), Kinks were part of the original wave of “British Invasion” bands. Known in their earliest days for power chords and songs about lust, their full on embrace of rock and roll lifestyle took its toll on them early on when a backstage incident at the Dick Cavett Show resulted in a four-year ban from performing live in the United States from 1965 to 1969 and caused the band to miss out on several cultural rock and roll milestones in the U.S during that period.
During this time, the main song writer Ray Davies began to turn his attention to his native England and British life after World War II. The result was a personal collection of songs, about remembrance and sorrow at the passing of days gone by.
