Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells a Story
Listen to full episode:
Rod Stewart is perhaps the most frustrating figure in popular music. He is a man gifted with arguably one of the best voices in rock and roll AND he can write some amazing songs, both straight-up rockers and heartfelt ballads. But as Stewart eventually moved to cash in on that talent, epitomized in the 1978 album, Blondes Have More Fun, he focussed less and less on those things that had made him so special.
On this episode, we look back his 1971 monster LP, Every Picture Tells a Story. This album finds him in peak form both as a singer and songwriter. As a result, he is the first artist to score both a Number One record and a Number One single at the same time.
As usual, we dig into the backstory leading up to the album, including Stewart’s time with the Jeff Beck Group, his early days jamming with Ray and Dave Davies, and of course his days as a member of the ultimate pub rock band - the Faces.
